Russia fired 36 missiles into Ukraine today, striking its largest oil refinery, according to Ukraine’s air force.

The damage at the Kremenchuk refinery, on the Dnipro River, was unclear, but an elderly woman was killed further south in Pavlohrad, near the city of Dnipro.

The head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional military, Serhii Lysak, said the 79-year-old woman died from her injuries at the scene, where 60 homes were destroyed.

“Until today’s fateful night, an elderly couple lived in this building in Pavlohrad,” reads a translated version of Mr Lysak’s post on Telegram.

“A beautiful married couple – quiet, friendly. They had plans for their children, their garden and their own dreams. The Russians destroyed everything.”

He described houses in ruin, burnt cars, broken windows and doors, and said eight more people were injured.

“After the missile strike, the whole street looks like something out of a horror movie,” he wrote.

Repairmen working on communication lines in Vovchansk, an eastern city near Kharkiv, were also injured by the strikes, posted governor Oleh Syniehubov on Telegram.

He said there were six victims aged 30 to 65, one of whom is in a life-threatening condition.

Ukraine’s air force shot down 16 of the missiles fired, it said.

Police in Moldova said they found missile debris near the border with Ukraine.

Its parliament approved a pro-Western government earlier today (see our post at 3.23pm).
