The coldest place in the US on Friday, according to the National Weather Service, was Havre.

Havre, a remote town in northern Montana near the Canadian border with a population of around 9,000, was -38F (-39C) at its lowest, rising to -20F (-28C) just before noon.

Tyler
Schaub, the manager of Rod’s Drive Inn, told Reuters news agency: “We’re used to it, but even then
it’s best not to stay outside too long.”

At the other end of the country, in El Paso, Texas, high winds sent temperatures down to -18C. At these temperatures you can get frostbite in minutes.

Hard-freeze warnings are in place for southern Georgia and much of the four Gulf Coast states – Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Florida.

We’ve also seen blinding snow from the northern Plains and Great Lakes region to the upper
Mississippi Valley, the Ohio Valley, western New York state and
mountains of the northern and central Appalachians.
